You've always heard that saying, that things are always bigger in Texas. Well, this is one case where you don't want it to be bigger.

Residents in the small town of Daisetta, Texas have been living a nightmare for years over a giant sinkhole that has been threatening the community and shows to be growing and getting larger once again. The sinkhole began in 2008 and was the size of a small pond before it turned into a larger pond, the story made national news headlines. The sinkhole has been dormant for around 15 years until this past Sunday when residents noticed a building leaning into the water.

Big Hole

The Liberty County Assistant Fire Marshal estimates the sinkhole has expanded to 150 feet in width and 150 feet in depth. Sinkholes are unpredictable and people should stay away from them for their safety. Over the years, people from this small Texas town have been moving out while others are just waiting it out in hopes that it stops for good but for now, it shows no signs of stopping.

According to an official with the Office of Emergency Management, evacuations have not been issued at this time. The sinkhole in Liberty County sits atop a salt dome and geologists, environmentalists along with other state officials will continue to monitor the situation closely.

This sinkhole reminds me of some catastrophic movie or most recently the NBC TV show, La Brea where a huge sinkhole opens up in L.A. and swallows up a bunch of people where they wind up in a different time-period on Earth.

Daisetta, Texas is about 4 and a half hours down Hwy 59 south of Texarkana.
