The magic of NPR’s Tiny Desk is simple: strip the production down and let the music do the talking. Texas has sent some of its finest artists to the Desk, and every performance proves just how wide the state’s sound stretches, from soul to rap, gospel to blues.

Leon Bridges (Fort Worth)

Leon Bridges brought his throwback soul and velvet vocals to Tiny Desk back in 2015. With stripped-down instrumentation, his timeless sound felt right at home in the intimate setting.

Gary Clark Jr. (Austin)

One of Texas’s modern guitar heroes, Gary Clark Jr. tore through the Tiny Desk in 2019. His mix of blues, rock, and raw emotion showed just how versatile the Austin powerhouse can be.

Erykah Badu (Dallas)

Neo-soul royalty herself, Erykah Badu, made the Desk feel like home in 2018. Her set was part meditation, part groove, and all Badu, pure Dallas magic.

Khruangbin (Houston area)

Known for dreamy, global-inspired grooves, Khruangbin transformed the Tiny Desk in 2018. With hypnotic instrumentals and lush vibes, the Houston trio delivered one of the most unique sessions.

The Suffers (Houston)

This Houston soul collective brought the horns, the funk, and the fire in 2016. Frontwoman Kam Franklin’s powerhouse voice turned the Desk into a full-blown party.

Scarface (Houston)

Hip-hop legend Scarface took the Desk in 2023 and proved why he’s one of rap’s greatest storytellers. Backed by a live band, his rhymes hit harder than ever.

Kirk Franklin (Fort Worth)

The gospel giant lit up the Tiny Desk (Home) concert series with pure energy and joy. Choir harmonies, claps, and Franklin’s magnetic stage presence made it unforgettable.

Tobe Nwigwe (Houston)

Tobe Nwigwe’s debut Tiny Desk in 2022 was an explosion of charisma. With his wife Fat and crew at his side, the Alief rapper showed off sharp lyricism and undeniable showmanship.

Charley Crockett (San Benito)

The South Texas troubadour brought his Americana-blues grit to Tiny Desk in 2023. Dressed sharp, with songs that sound like they’ve been around for a century, Crockett reminded everyone why he’s one of country’s freshest voices.

Davíd Garza (Irving)

A Texas songwriting staple, Davíd Garza stripped it down for a moving Tiny Desk session. His heartfelt lyrics and raw delivery put the focus squarely on his storytelling.

Hayden Pedigo (Amarillo)

From the Panhandle came something unexpected: Hayden Pedigo’s minimalist guitar instrumentals. His set was atmospheric, haunting, and a reminder of just how wide Texas’s sonic landscape really is.

Grupo Frontera (Rio Grande Valley)

In 2025, Grupo Frontera brought the borderlands to NPR. With accordion, bajo sexto, and heartfelt vocals, their Tiny Desk was a full celebration of Tejano and regional Mexican sound, proudly waving the RGV flag.

Texas doesn’t just produce stars, it produces voices and sounds that belong in every corner of the musical universe. Tiny Desk is proof of that.
