According to Southern Living, the Christmas pickle is based on a German-American Christmas tradition in which a pickle ornament is hidden in a Christmas tree. There are many stories about how the Christmas Pickle became a holiday tradition including one involving a German-American soldier who was being held as a prisoner on Christmas Eve during the Civil War.
