Believe it or not, the history of the barn star goes back as far as the 18th Century and was commonly seen in German farming communities. The star was a symbol used to ward off evil and bring good luck and prosperity to farmers such as the horseshoe. The stars can come in different forms and colors with each color representing something unique.

Back in those days, the popularity grew after the Civil War. The star was usually painted on the side of a barn or building but in the 1930s, and 1940s  that trend began to change into pieces of art decor that could be used for decorating purposes as we see today, according to Wide Open Country.

Nowadays, people may not even care what it means other than they just like the way it looks on the outside or inside of their home gives their home that Americana feel.
