Recent winter weather across the region has significantly reduced blood and platelet collections, creating added pressure on inventory at LifeShare Blood Center in Texarkana.

Conditions forced temporary donor center closures and led to the cancellation of several blood drives. These disruptions came at a time when hospitals often experience increased patient needs, tightening the local blood supply even further.

Short Shelf Life Raises Urgency

Blood products have a limited shelf life, making consistent donations essential. Red blood cells can be stored for up to 42 days, while platelets, used to treat cancer patients, trauma victims, and surgical patients, last only five to seven days.

LifeShare officials say missing even one day of platelet collections can directly affect the ability to meet local hospital demand.

“Patient needs don’t pause for winter storms, and hospitals rely on us to have lifesaving products available every day,” said Mandi Johnson, Director of Community Engagement for LifeShare Blood Center.

Platelet Donations Especially Needed

While all blood donations are needed, LifeShare says platelet donations are especially critical. Platelets can only be donated in-center using specialized equipment and trained staff.

Some donors may need to complete a brief screening, including antibody testing, before becoming eligible to donate platelets. LifeShare staff guide donors through the process to ensure safety for both donors and patients.
