‘Lake Seeding In Arkansas’ – What’s That All About?
First, I have to admit to being a bit conspiratorial, now, it's not like the government hasn't earned our suspicions, but at first glance, this story made me give it the ol' side-eye. Let's dive in and see what "Lake Seeding" in Arkansas is all about before I reach for the tinfoil hat.
According to a release, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) is taking innovative steps to improve fish and waterfowl habitats at lakes all over the state, the most recent was back on July 10 at Nimrod Lake in Perry and Yell counties by using agricultural airplanes to disperse millet seeds.
I feel better already, not even looking at the tinfoil hat now... much.
Thousands of pounds of millet seed were dropped onto the exposed mudflats of Nimrod Lake during its summer drawdown. The purpose is to enhance the habitat for fish, wintering waterfowl, and other wildlife.
“We performed two seeding flights in late June and early July,” said Jason Jackson, Wetlands Program Coordinator for the AGFC. “While the soil on the lakebed has other seeds that will sprout, we’re focusing on fast-growing millet to maximize vegetation benefits, providing significant energy for wildlife once it forms seed heads.”
The drawdown, which began in mid-May, is a good time to repair channel markers, boat launch ramps, and swimming areas. A major benefit of the drawdown is the resurgence of terrestrial vegetation on the exposed lakebed.
Increasing the vegetation filters sediment, which improves water clarity, and provides cover for baitfish and young sportfish. As it decomposes, it fertilizes the ecosystem, benefiting insects, crustaceans, and other organisms that form the food chain base, thereby boosting fish health.
Additionally, the millet seeds will provide high-energy food for migrating and wintering waterfowl in the region, enhancing the habitat for these birds. This means a better duck season, not to be confused with wabbit season.
The same treatment was performed on Millwood Lake in 2023.
The Tinfoil hat is completely forgotten about, for now. Carry on Arkansas, you're looking good!
