
Red River Army Depot Conducts Controlled Burns As Conditions Allow
If you live on the Texas-side of Texarkana, or travel back and forth along I-30 in the direction of New Boston or Texarkana, Hwy 82, 67 or 8, and you're wondering "where that smoke is coming from?" It's okay, it's the Depot.
Controlled Burns In Effect
Red River Army Depot announced today that it is conducting prescribed controlled burns in and around the Depot area as weather conditions allow. These controlled burns are scheduled to take place from now through May of this year.

According to the release; The burns taking place today are happening west of Caney Lake. The release states that:
Due to equipment use limitations in this area, this is an important burn for decreasing fuel loading, which allows for added firefighter safety should a wildfire occur here.
RRAD - Reason For Controlled Burns
Prescribed burns are carried out each year to help keep forests healthy, improve wildlife habitat, and provide valuable training for firefighters. These controlled burns also help protect Depot employees, facilities, and nearby communities by reducing the risk of dangerous wildfires on the Army installation.

Depot land managers are always mindful of smoke and work hard to limit any impacts on the Depot and surrounding areas. When a burn is planned, notifications are shared each morning.
Special Note During Countywide Burn Ban
If a burn takes place during an active countywide burn ban, it will only be done when fully justified, following all prescribed burn guidelines, and with contingency resources in place.
