The temperature are going to keep rising now that we are officially into the summer months. I know a lot of people have dogs that stay outside most of the time, but how hot is too hot for your dog?

According to the website Health.com a good way to tell if it's too hot outside for your dog, take the temperature and the humidity and add those numbers together. If the number is 150 or higher then it's time to make sure your dog doesn't get overheated.

Here are some great tips on helping your dog stay cool from Bluecross.org:

  • Make sure your dog has access to clean water at all times, ideally a large bowl filled to the brim. Carry water and a bowl with you on walks.

  • On hot days, walk your dog during the cooler parts of the day, in the early morning and late evening

  • Watch your pet for signs of over-heating, including heavy panting and loss of energy. If you recognise these signs when on a walk, stop, find a shady spot and give your dog water.

  • Never leave your dog (or any pet) alone in a car, even with the windows open.

Here's another important tip that they gave, it's about a dog's paw pads. If the concrete on a sidewalk or the street feels hot to your hands then your dog shouldn't walk on it.
