Texas A&M University-Texarkana will host its 28th annual Young Writers’ Workshop July 17-28 on the A&M-Texarkana campus.

The Young Writers’ Workshop is a two-week program open to students in grades 2-12 from across the region. Participants spend their time engaged in reading, writing and artistic activities designed to develop and deepen their understanding of genres and themes often left underexplored in traditional classrooms.

In previous summers, participants have explored genres including myths, fairy tales, travel memoirs, adventure writing, proposals, poetry, one-day plays, character sketches, short fiction and graphic novels.

Workshops are as follows:

·        Workshop 1:We Love Our Pets!– grades 2-3
·        Workshop 2:Magnificent Mysteries and Whodunits” – grades 4-6
·        Workshop 3:Fantastic Fantasy– grades 7-8
·        Workshop 4: “Weird Science” – grades 9-12

By the end of the program, the young writers have much to show from their efforts. Products are displayed in a showcase in a final closing ceremony open to parents, family, and campus and community friends. Students also have an opportunity to publish their best work in the program’s annual anthology.

Registration is $40 and includes an anthology of work, commemorative DVD, writing supplies, a free T-shirt and A&M-Texarkana goodies.

This summer, thanks to the generous support of the Bobbie Arnold Atkinson Foundation, participants will have an opportunity to meet and learn from a published children’s author during one day of the program.

“Summer learning loss impacts all learners, and the YWW program helps combat that loss by engaging our young writers in reading, writing, critical thinking in a socially safe and supportive space,” said Dr. Corrine Hinton, assistant professor of English and program director. “This summer’s program is poised to be an educational and fun experience for all of our participants. We encourage their creativity through words, images and design, and the best part for all of us involved is celebrating their achievements with their families during our closing ceremony.”
